Top 10 Tracks- 2014

One more year, one more list!

Disappointingly, this year wasn't one of the best years for music. Hardly any album or any band was outstanding ( I guess we have finally/really arrived in the era of spotify/singles). Nonetheless, we had some really great music and some amazing collection of magical sounds coming from all over the places and luckily, I managed to go through as many of them as possible to shortlist 10 best songs of 2014.

This year was life changing (well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but honestly, at least it was genre changing for my music palette). I listened to a lot and I mean a shitload LOT of Hip-Hop this year. From Yeezy to Drizzy to Jay-Z to SHADY to Biggie to K Dot to J Cole. Everyone made my list and I went through a decade of hip-hop music in just less than a year :D

There are two songs placed at 10th, 9th, 8th & 5th spot and I have tried to have just one song per artist for the list. I think I've heard each song on this list at least about 50 times.

I'll give you one secret for free. How to know if it's a good song? Start a song. Do something else while the song is running in the background. Pause it after a while. Somewhere in the middle. If you think you feel better after pausing it, then the song was shit. Instead, if you feel like something good was happening & you feel partially incomplete, then it means the song had that something, something special, that makes it a good song. There you go. You have THE secret :P Ahh,, forget it! Idk why I wrote it, it's silly.

Not wasting anymore of your precious/worthless time, here's the list;)

13. ALBUMS THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

You see, people are like albums.
Some you like, some you despise.

Some are hard to get through, some just flow like water do.
Some you fall in love with at very first instance, some take time while with some you always maintain a distance.
Some are your favourite worst nightmare, some you don't even remember to care.
Some you grow over with time, some you keep coming back time after time.
Some you wait for time that feels like ages, only to be disappointed & bored,
some you just stumble upon with a pleasant surprise and always wonder why you never discovered them before.
You see, albums are like people.
Albums you like & people you hold on to, tell about you more than you'll ever want to.

12. ETERNAL SADNESS

Julian Casablancas dropped an eleven minute single 'Human Sadness' this week. This is inspired from his work. Eagerly waiting for the album :)

When vanity overruns wisdom
And also common sense
When lust defeats reason

Mostly in past tense
When heart feels lonesome
When time's spent in boredom
When things once done can't be undone
When eyes weep often & mind rests seldom
When you think of someone and can't sleep even after one
When her face can't be forgotten
When love loses all it's fun
It is then you realize
To be is not to be
To be is not the way to be
It was never gonna be
To be is what was meant to be

Somethings are just not to be
Wherever I see,  there's nowhere I'd rather be

On and on... I wait for truth
On and on.... I wait for you
On and on.... So alone
And on and on..... Oh so wrong
So
Calm me down, cheer me up
Sing me down, shut me up

Put me down, pull me up
Let me down, give it up
Slow me down, hurry up
Just find me now and turn me upside down
I'll find you soon and I'll get along with you

This real madness, this human sadness
And it lasts forever, this eternal sadness

24

Apparently I'm turning 24 in an hour. With an exam on my head tomorrow, I have found a new way of procrastinating. So why not make a post about usage of being 24 in music world?! I guess lots of artists have mentioned 18(or basically late teens) in their lyrics every now and then, but not that many have used 24( you don't say!). Last year I posted "What's My Age Again?" by blink-182 on my facebook page on my birthday. But I had no song in my mind for being 24. Well, there's this one good song by The Maine but it's a bit too sad for such a happy occasion. So I started looking online for a nice happy song about turning 24 (you don't turn 24 every year, right ?! ). Contrary to my expectations, I actually found a few songs ( some of them being quite good). So here is this post about being 24 along with some "nerdy" interpretation of using 24 in different songs. Here I won't mention the songs with just 24 in their titles( apparently there are shitload of songs with 24 in them or a reference to 24, guess what else is 24? , yeah, hours in a day etc.). Maybe I'll be still missing some songs but I guess this much should do for now ;)

Album Review 3: Comedown Machine- The Strokes

So the first in this series is the latest installment from The Strokes that came out in the early half of the last year, 'Comedown Machine'. If you Google reviews for this album, you're highly unlikely to find a positive review. This album is a turning point in my music listening habit.I started out with 'Tap Out' at around the same time when I first heard 'Instant Crush' from Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories' and I felt like both the songs were from the same band, catchy, dance-y and really fresh. I don't want to talk about how I resisted myself from giving the whole album a try as I was quite 'busy' discovering Arctic Monkeys during the summer of 2013 and at that point The Strokes were just another post-punk band from England who made music similar to early Arctic Monkeys or The Libertines ( yeah, it's a shame, I know now how wrong I was!) to me .
I don't remember when and how I stumbled upon 'Call It Fate, Call It Karma', somewhere around July of 2013. I was totally surprised by the sound of this song. It was something so different, something I had never expected from this band ( even though I had no fucking clue about this band's music. See, how much an image of a band can keep you in dark for such a long time!) . This song was on repeat for most part of the late long summer evenings of 2013 (oh, how I remember those long never ending Finnish summer evenings were filled by this nostalgic and haunting piece of Julian's falsetto). But even till then, I was not fully getting the album. I had tried some songs like 'All The Time', 'One Way Trigger' & '80's Comedown Machine' with not much effect.

11: If I Have To Choose Between Myself and You, I'll Always Choose To Be Leonardo DiCaprio!

God, I need to escape through a hole, will you show me
Cause I've been living between people, but still feeling lonely
And I've been trying to catch her in thrift stores and same shops
Oh God! Why don't you make me a boat and let me sail in my teardrops
She called me asshole, I called her fucktard
I'm a looser when it comes to game of two hearts
What's art?
Don't start!

10: Dreaming on My Bed, I'm Travelling to Stars so Far, at Light Speed!

I touched the sky
I wonder if it sounds strange but I don't know why
I told a truth and then a lie
I need you still & I don't know why
I sailed to the moon
I looked at you to my surprise
I slipped too soon
Slipped for forever from your eyes
